Trip Overview

From the unrivaled beauty of the majestic Rocky Mountains to the awe-inspiring landscapes of Yellowstone and Yosemite, and the exciting cityscape of San Francisco, this 11-day rail journey will surely have you creating memories to last a lifetime. Beginning in Denver, you’ll have time to enjoy the Mile-High City’s culture and charm before venturing to Rocky Mountain National Park for a sightseeing tour of its natural wonders. Then, you’ll board Amtrak’s California Zephyr and head to Salt Lake City. This is a train route than many travelers say is one of the most beautiful trips in all of North America. From there, it’s time to explore Yellowstone National Park and all of the crowd-pleasing sights that attract more than four million people from around the world each year. On Day 8, you arrive in San Francisco in the evening and will have some free time to explore the city on your own. In the morning, you’ll head to one of America’s most iconic national landmarks, Yosemite National Park, for a full day of discovery before heading back to San Francisco to wrap up your Peaks to Pacific Grand Rail Journey in style.

DAY 1              DENVER
Welcome to Denver, Colorado, the gateway to the Rocky Mountains! This former railroad town is the perfect place to begin your Peaks to Pacific Grand Rail Journey. While the city’s allure certainly lies in its rich cultural heritage and the surrounding landscape dominated by the rugged beauty of the Rocky Mountains, there is so much more to discover. Tour the internationally renowned Clyfford Still Museum and Denver Art Museum, visit the Cherry Creek neighborhood (the largest shopping district between San Francisco and St. Louis), grab a cup of coffee in Larimer Square in the heart of Denver’s LoDo (short for Lower Downtown) or an ice-cold beer from a local brewpub, stroll through tree-lined Washington Park, or enjoy some world-class cuisine in the Highlands neighborhood. DAY 2              DENVER
Today, you will spend the day sightseeing in Rocky Mountain National Park. Picture postcards just don’t do this place justice. You have to see it for yourself. This national park is easily one of America’s greatest natural wonders. You are guaranteed to be awed by the breathtaking views offered at Gore Range Overlook, Trail Ridge Road, Many Parks Curve, and Bear Lake Road. The gorgeous Colorado wilderness in Rocky Mountain National Park offers something for everyone to enjoy. You’ll definitely want your camera on hand for this tour as well as the drive back to your hotel, as you’ll be able to take advantage of several photo opportunities along the way. DAY 3              DENVER TO SALT LAKE CITY
Travel to the station and board Amtrak’s California Zephyr to Salt Lake City for what many travelers say is one of the most beautiful train trips in all of North America. As you climb through the heart of the Rockies you may find it hard to disagree. Just sit back, relax, and enjoy the gorgeous scenery. Tonight, enjoy dinner at The Roof Restaurant. (Overnight in Salt Lake City)

DAY 4              SALT LAKE CITY TO YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
Today, your included roundtrip shuttle service will take you on a scenic drive to West Yellowstone. Check in to your included hotel and settle in for a good night’s rest. (Overnight in West Yellowstone)

DAY 5              YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
Enjoy a full-day sightseeing tour of Yellowstone National Park’s wonders. Highlights of this informative and scenic tour include all the beautiful, popular sights that attract more than four million people from around the world each year. You may even encounter unexpected delights, such as a bison herd blocking the highway or a grizzly bear showing its cubs how to find food. Enjoy a leisurely lunch on your own at the Old Faithful Village. (Overnight in West Yellowstone)

DAY 6              YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
Continue exploring Yellowstone National Park on your sightseeing tour and take in all the experiences and sights that you didn’t get to yesterday. Crowd-pleasing attractions may include the Old Faithful Geyser, Isa Lake on the Continental Divide, Hayden Valley, Upper and Lower Falls, Lamar Valley, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Lower Geyser Basin. (Overnight in West Yellowstone)

DAY 7              OVERNIGHT ONBOARD AMTRAK
Today, you will take a relaxing drive back to Salt Lake City on board the shuttle. Be sure to scope out the breathtaking views along the way. Transfer on your own to the station and board Amtrak’s California Zephyr® to San Francisco. (Overnight onboard Amtrak)

DAY 8              SAN FRANCISCO
Arrive in the evening in San Francisco at the Emeryville station, where you will board your included motor coach transfer for a short trip across the bay to San Francisco. Upon your arrival in the festive “City by the Bay,” feel free to start exploring the area on your own. The famous Fisherman’s Wharf, which offers entertainment, shopping, and tasty local cuisine, is a great place to start. (Overnight in San Francisco)

DAY 9              YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK
Today you’ll spend the day taking in the beauty of one of America’s most iconic national landmarks, Yosemite National Park. But first, enjoy the panoramic views of the gorgeous San Francisco sunrise while crossing the Bay Bridge. The rest of your drive to Yosemite will offer stunning scenery as well, including the snow-capped Sierra Nevada Mountains. Once you reach this serene destination, you’ll have 2.5 hours to hike, shop, and sample the local cuisine in Yosemite Village. Arrive back at your hotel just in time for a spectacular San Francisco sunset.  (Overnight in San Francisco)   

DAY 10            SAN FRANCISCO
Take advantage of your included Hop-On, Hop-Off sightseeing tour and get to know the gorgeous, bustling city of San Francisco! Visit Pier 39, Fisherman’s Wharf, SOMA District, Nob Hill West, Chinatown, the Filbert Street Steps, Haight-Ashbury, Golden Gate Park, and so much more. Then, embark on your included bay cruise. Featuring live narration describing all the major landmarks, incredible views of the city’s skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge, you’ll get to experience San Francisco from an entirely different perspective.
