What is a Superliner and Viewliner Sleeper?

The Amtrak Sleeping Car fleet consists of two types of cars: Superliner and Viewliner. The primary difference: a Superliner features two levels of private accommodations per car and Viewliner features a single level. For your trip, the type of car will depend on the route you select. Once you are onboard, your Sleeping Car attendant can provide more information about both your room and your car.

Onboard the Train FAQs

How many people can a bedroom accommodate?

Most sleeping car rooms are designed to comfortably accommodate two averaged-sized adults, one in each berth. Some rooms can accommodate more: on Superliner trains, for example, Family Bedrooms are designed to accommodate two adults and two children. Regular Bedrooms (not Roomettes, Family Bedrooms or Accessible Bedrooms) can be combined to create Bedroom Suites. In addition, lower berths in all Bedrooms (but not Roomettes) can accommodate two small adults or children, allowing up to three to share a room.

Are meals included with my sleeping accommodation?

Yes. Sleeping accommodations are considered “Sleeper Service” accommodations aboard Amtrak. As Sleeper Service passengers, you and your sleeping car companions (up to the maximum passenger capacity for your accommodation) are entitled to receive all regular meals as part of your accommodations. The only exception is Silver Star trains.

Can I upgrade to sleeping accommodations on any Amtrak Vacations package?

Yes! You can upgrade to sleeping accommodations on any itinerary that includes overnight rail. If a package does not include overnight rail, you can add it on.

Do the private rooms have bathrooms and showers?

Yes. All rooms have access to restrooms and showers. Bed linens and soap are included, as well as, bottled water, coffee, and assistance from a Sleeping Car attendant.

If I'm booked in Coach, can I upgrade?

Yes, you can upgrade up to one business day before your departure by calling us directly. Rooms are subject to availability.

Are there any other perks?

Yes! Sleeping car passengers are entitled to a range of hotel-like amenities, including fresh linen and towel service and complimentary bottled water. In addition, you and your companions enjoy access during your voyage to ClubAcela and Amtrak Metropolitan Lounges located at select stations.
