The Sunwapta is the only grade 3 whitewater offered in Jasper National Park. The season is limited to mid-June to mid-August. The river is glacial fed and as long as the weather is warm we can have great water up until closing. The river trip itself begins with a float where crews can practice their paddling technique before the show begins. Once the rapids start they just build and build until the Whopper soaks everyone just before the take out. Once the rapids start it is still important to look at the 360 degree mountain Views. The river follows the jagged ridge of the Endless Chain.
This river is aptly named Sunwapta (turbulent waters). The first half of the trip is gentle and scenic paddling. The latter portion presents sustained white water up to Class 3. This run is very challenging and is tailored for those who are physically fit and strong swimmers.
We provide national park licensed guides, wet suits, life jackets, paddle jackets, neoprene booties. Wind pants, touques, neoprene mitts are available for inclement weather. All you need to bring is enthusiasm, a bathing suit or shorts and a T-shirt. Rain or Shine this trip is fun for ages 6 and up.
