6 Not To Be Missed Train Experiences

The long-distance train experience is something you can try to describe to someone, but until they’ve actually experienced it themselves, even the most glowing descriptions don’t really do it justice. From the shifting scenery right outside your window to the comfortable, relaxed pace onboard the train, it’s an unforgettable experience full of unexpected surprises, like the 6 things featured below…

1. FIND YOURSELF IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE

No roads, no traffic, no people. Just miles and miles of natural scenery, and you’re right in the middle of it. Plus, you have a comfortable, front-row seat. Unobstructed, up-close views like this are rare, and for many riders, it’s the best part of the train experience. Special views include the stunning desert vistas on the western route of the Southwest Chief, from Chicago to Los Angeles; the rugged Pacific Ocean coastline views down the California Coast on the Pacific Surfliner; and the snow-capped mountain views on the Coast Starlight through the Pacific Northwest.

2. DISCOVER A PIECE OF AMERICAN HISTORY

Enjoy re-tracing history on some of Amtrak’s long-distance train routes, which literally follow in the footsteps of some of the early American explorers. Imagine what it must have been like to first set foot on open, untouched land. The Empire Builder in particular, travels along major portions of the Lewis and Clark trail, following the footsteps of early pioneers, to the spectacular Glacier National Park. Parts of the route include narration from volunteers who point out significant landmarks along the way, enriching the experience for adults and children alike.

3. MAKE SOME NEW FRIENDS

The relaxed pace onboard the train lends itself to an open, welcoming environment conducive to meeting other passengers and friendly staff members. A meal in the dining car quickly becomes an opportunity to strike up a conversation with the friendly person sitting across from you. Riders have met other passengers who have become lifelong friends and repeat travel companions, and repeat travelers often know long-term staff on a first name basis.

4. SLEEP LIKE A BABY

Upgrade to a roomette or a bedroom in the sleeper car and let the gentle rocking motion of the train lull you to sleep. Riders are often surprised by how peacefully they sleep on the train, without the distraction of everyday life interruptions.  And with blankets, pillows, climate control and towel and linens provided, your room on board is a cozy, comfortable environment.

5. EAT AND DRINK WELL

Enjoy Amtrak’s restaurant on rails in the train’s dining car, which is included when a sleeper car room is booked. That means freshly-prepared, hot meals on most routes, often cooked to order, as well as vegetarian options and lighter fare.  Enjoy three full meals per day, enjoy a refreshing beverage and sit with some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.

6. UNPLUG AND RECONNECT

While the thought of having limited cell service and Wi-Fi may initially be scary, the limitation provides an increasingly rare opportunity to slow down and reconnect, and one which many riders relish. Experience the joy of reading a new book, playing a board game or cards, or simply daydreaming as you gaze out the window at the passing scenery.
