Lake Louise, Alberta
Please visit our Passport Information Page for border crossing passport requirements.

Uncrowded slopes, abundant snowfall, mountain towns alive with spirit. Nestled in the heart of the Canadian Rocky Mountains, Lake Louise promises memorable skiing and snowboarding amidst the world's most awesome scenery. You'll find ski areas and mountain towns alive with spirit and hospitality (Mount Norquay, Sunshine Village and Lake Louise) - all just 90 minutes from Calgary International Airport.

It's almost impossible, upon first seeing Lake Louise, not to gasp. The beautiful, milky blue lake rests at the foot of Victoria Glacier, which rises majestically and behind it, capped by snow and ice year-round. First sighted by Europeans in 1882, the lake has become one of Canada's best-loved and most-visited resorts. The village that grew up around it is reassuringly compact. Set on the lake itself, the Château Lake Louise, built by the Canadian Pacific Railroad, is now the focus of shopping, dining, and recreation on the upper slopes of the mountain. Farther below lies the village itself, which is composed mainly of resorts and the small Samson Mall. The entire area offers a host of leisure opportunities, including skiing, hiking, fishing, and biking. Moraine Lake is a short distance away and is perfect for a day trip. As with most of the Rockies, the area affords incredible opportunity for sightseeing and photography.

In an area this remote, wildlife sightings are quite common. Some of the animals you might see are porcupines, cougars, grizzly and black bears, deer, beaver, marmot, mountain goat, wolverine, coyote, elk, and moose, plus a wide assortment of birds.

#1 for scenery, #2 for value, and # 18 overall among North American ski resorts. Or so say the readers of Ski Magazine, who regularly rank Lake Louise tops in numerous different categories.

You don't have to be a skier to appreciate Lake Louise – the scenery alone makes a trip here worthwhile. But if you're looking for activities, you'll find plenty. In addition to traditional downhill skiing, there's cross-country and heli-skiing, snowboarding, ice skating, dog sledding, snowmobiling, sleigh rides, and snow shoeing. And that's just in the winter.
