South of Pyramid Lake are Northern Nevadas largest cities, Reno and Sparks. Reno was Nevadas original gambling and divorce capital gaining national attention in the 1930s and 40s for its wide-open attitudes. Visitors can enjoy a visit to Renos National Automobile Museum and the Nevada Museum of Art, or stroll the shaded grounds of the University of Nevada, Reno, the states oldest college.
Reno also boasts a variety of Art galleries, cultural festivals, and historic sites for those needing time away from the bustle of the casinos! Adventurers can partake in a myriad of outdoor activities, such as mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, kayaking and much more.
The city of Sparks has grown from a sleepy railroad town to a resort center with hotel-casinos offering round-the-clock gaming, gourmet dining, and entertainment. Downtown Sparks is the location of Victorian Square, a popular public gathering area that hosts unique special events including rib cook-offs, car shows, and festivals.
Twenty-four miles southeast of Reno is historic Virginia City. The photogenic 19th-century community is the heart of the Comstock mining district, which was one of the Wests largest silver discoveries. The Comstock mining district gave up tons of gold and silver to miners and once represented the richest lifestyles. Virginia City remains the main attraction of the district today with its wooden sidewalks and falsefront saloons, restaurants, and businesses. Visitors can take a ride on the reconstructed Virginia & Truckee Railroad, which operates between Virginia City and the adjacent mining town of Gold Hill, or visit the many museums that line its steep streets.
