Seattle, known as the 'Emerald City' is a gem in the Pacific Northwest, surrounded by water and mountains, with stunning views from many vantage points throughout the city. Seattle offers a full range of arts, cultural and sporting events and attractions, plus an abundance of shops and restaurants for visitors. Attractions outside of the city include the Boeing Plant just north of Seattle, and several hours to the east, the awesome height of Mount Rainier is truly appreciated when seen from within the city, as it puts skyscrapers to shame from 200 miles away!
Seattle is anything but ordinary. It's a place where bike messengers share elevators with world-renowned researchers. Where fishermen have lunch alongside top surgeons. It's a city where the extraordinary is commonplace and commonplace is anything but. And if you look closely, you just might discover that in Seattle there are amazing things happening all around you.
From a jet engine to an espresso machine to grunge rock, Seattle's world-changing events have all had a distinct sound. But the symphony doesn't end there. Your visit to Seattle may bring you the sound of an orca blowing as it surfaces, the roar of the crowd at Safeco Field or the near silence of the Olympic rainforest. Come to Seattle and hear for yourself.
The Space Needle, Seattle's premier landmark, rotates 360 degrees to provide breath-taking views of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains from its restaurant and observation deck. The 605-foot tower was designed for the 1962 World's Fair. It and the surrounding park draw 9 million visitors a year.
Seattle's first economic boomtime came in 1897, when a steamship bearing two tons of gold from the Yukon sailed into port. Within weeks, thousands of treasure-seekers from across the country stampeded to Seattle to make their way to the Klondike in search of fortune.
